August 4th - Day 7 – Whistler to Salt Spring Island

We left Whistler for the short drive back down Highway 99 to the ferry terminal at Horseshoe Bay. The ferry goes from Horseshoe Bay to Departure Bay on Vancouver Island, crossing the Inside Channel. The journey is about one hour and forty minutes.

We arrived at the terminal with plenty of time to spare and tried to alter the booking for Bob & Thelma from today, by 24 hours, as they were staying an extra day in Whistler. No such luck as all the reservations had been taken. We just had to hope they wouldn’t have a problem.

While we were waiting I noticed this magnificent Chrysler Imperial parked in the line waiting to board the ferry. They don’t make cars looking like this any more!

We boarded the ferry, the Coastal Renaissance, with several hundred other cars.

It was a very smooth crossing, with the one disappointment of not seeing any killer whales, which are often seen from the ferry. On board the ferry.

We arrived on Vancouver Island at about 2.30pm and had just over an hour to catch the ferry from Crofton to Salt Spring Island. The drive south was only about 30 miles and we easily made it to Crofton to catch the 3.50pm ferry. Waiting in line for the ferry at Crofton.

The crossing was just 20 minutes and on the way over we were asked by the captain to join him on the bridge. He had seen the stickers on the car and was interested in our travels. He even allowed me to take the helm, but only on the understanding I wore his captain’s hat!!

We disembarked and drove the final 20 miles to my cousin’s house. It really is in the most beautiful place imaginable. The house overlooks several islands and ferries pass through the channel on regular intervals. I could easily stay here for a long, long time! The view from the patio overlooking the islands and the channel that runs between Salt Spring Island and Vancouver Island in the distance.

Basil farms apples and also has a few sheep that graze on the property. The orchards as you drive into the property.

Basil’s son Ian looks after the farm and before our evening meal I went with Basil to feed the sheep. He showed me two that he rescued after their mother had abandoned them at birth. Four times a day he fed them with milk from a baby bottle, and now they are five months old and healthy looking animals.

We discovered that tomorrow is Basil and Margaret’s 59th wedding anniversary, so we will be able to celebrate with them.
