August 3rd - Day 6 - Seattle to Whistler, Canada

The shortest drive of the trip so far, a mere 221 miles.

We left Seattle at around 10am for the 100 miles up I5 to the border with Canada. It was an easy run with quite heavy traffic leaving Seattle, but by the time we reached Blaine, at the border, the traffic was quite light. The crossing into Canada was accomplished in just a few minutes.

The border with Canada.

The drive then took us through the outskirts of Vancouver and then up Hwy 99 to Whistler, a total of 110 miles. Downtown Vancouver as we drove through the suburbs.

With Whistler being the site of the Feb 2010 Winter Olympics the road from Vancouver has been upgraded for most of the way and it is now an easy drive along the wonderful western coast of British Columbia.

We arrived in Whistler at about 2.30pm and went with Bob and Thelma to see the sites they have bought to build two houses just above Whistler. They are located in a wonderful position lookingdown into the valley. Me, Thelma and Bob scrambling over the building site to see the views from the top.

We then drove the last few miles to our hotel, the Westin Resort, which is located next to Whistler Village. After checking in, we drove to the edge of Lake Alta to take a walk and have some exercise after sitting in the car for over four hours. Down by the lake were a large number of families enjoying the sun and the water. There was a rather disconcerting sign by the water warning bathers of Swimmers' Itch!

We then drove back to the village and watched the mountain bikers coming down the slopes. In the summer the mountains are used as the ultimate mountain biking experience and it is great fun to watch the bikers doing incredible jumps as they descend the mountain.

We ended the day having a very good meal at a local restaurant. Tomorrow we drive to visit my cousin on Salt Spring Island while Bob & Thelma stay an extra day here in Whistler and then head for Victoria on Vancouver Island. We will meet up with them again in a couple of days.
