We have just one full day here with Basil and Margaret, so we started the day with a guided tour by Basil of his house and the shoreline. The house sits on a headland called Isabella Point and over the past couple of years Basil and Ian, his son, have built a boardwalk which runs around the house on the rocks above the sea. A couple of photos showing Wendy and Basil on the walk.
Two boats passing by with a section of the boardwalk in the foreground.
Basil has two peacocks that strut around the place. This one likes to sit on the rail that surrounds the patio.
The shoreline with the saltwater swimming pool in the foreground. The pool is refilled by the high tides.
We walked through the forest to Isabella Point and passed this Arbutus tree with its beautiful red paper bark that is continually peeling off the tree.
Ian’s dog, Max, that came with us on the walk.
In the afternoon we went to Ganges, the main town on the island to do some shopping and then have a meal to celebrate Basil & Margaret’s wedding anniversary. Ganges has a very pretty harbour which serves as the ‘runway’ for the seaplanes that are constantly landing and taking off for the other islands, as well as Vancouver.
The end to a perfect day.
A four-thousand-five-hundred mile drive from Malibu in California to Anchorage, Alaska. The route goes via Vancouver Island, the Inside Passage, Juneau, Skagway, Fairbanks, Prudhoe Bay (Arctic Ocean), Denali National Park and finishes in Anchorage.
