August 23rd - Day 26 - Denali National Park to Anchorage

The final day of driving had arrived. As we were about to go to breakfast Wendy's phone received a text message from our good friends Sue and Peter to tell us that England had won the Ashes. What a great way to start the day!

We left our hotel at about 9.30am and almost immediately the rain started falling. At times it was quite heavy and the fine views of the mountains we have had over the past week were just a memory as clouds covered everything.

Our drive south on Alaska Highway 3 was about 240 miles. About 50 miles south of Denali we came across Wal-Mike's, an incredible shop selling all sorts of tourist items from antlers to Alaska registration plates and Sarah Palin election posters!

Outside there was a pet caribou grazing on the grass verge. It had wonderful antlers.

About 50 miles north of Anchorage we passed the 4,500 mile mark since we left Malibu, on July 29th.

We then drove through Wasilla, the town where Sarah Palin was mayor before she became governor of Alaska.

Sadly for us the rain never let up and we drove into a very wet Anchorage.

This sign caught Wendy's eye as we drove through Anchorage. Anything but beef burgers!

We arrived at the Comfort Inn, our hotel for the two nights we are staying in Anchorage, at 2.30pm.

Journey's end, The Comfort Inn, Anchorage.

This gave us time to unpack everything from the car and go to a local bar and have a celebratory drink at finishing our fantastic North to Alaska trip. After a few beers and glasses of wine, Thelma produced an atlas of Canada and we started to plan our next trip which will go from Vancouver in the west to Nova Scotia in the east.

Bob then went to find a windscreen repair shop. A stone has cracked his windscreen and a crack is spreading across the glass. Apparently you can drill the glass to stop the crack from spreading.

Tomorrow afternoon we will be delivering the cars to the roll-on/roll-off shipping service that will take them to Tacoma.

I'll endeavour to post my initial thoughts on the whole trip tomorrow, when the adventure finally comes to a close.
