The longest day's drive of the whole tour, over 430 miles, but what a drive it was!
We left Sausalito overcast by low clouds and headed due north on Highway 101. Bob & Thelma were 'doing their own thing' by driving the coast route all the way to Eureka on Highway 1. We had driven that route on a couple of occasions before, so decided to use the 101 to Eureka and then follow it up to Crescent City before driving on the 199 to Grants Pass in Oregon and our hotel, the Weasku Inn, on the Rogue River.
The 101 at the beginning was just like all the other major freeways of the States: heavy traffic and pretty uninspiring scenery. That all changed about 100 miles north of Sausalito as we drove through a large wine growing region, with one winery after another.
The road then wound through magnificent pine clad hills with giant redwoods.
We decided to stop at the Benbow Inn a hotel we had stayed at many years ago for a coffee It is unlike most American hotels we have stayed in, as it has a very European feel to it.
The drive on to Eureka on the coast is through the giant redwood forests. The trees are truly a wonder of nature, growing to nearly 400ft in height and living for up to two thousand years.
We arrived in Eureka at at 2.30pm and called Bob & Thelma who were about an hour behind us. We took a few photos of the town as well as the harbour where the deep sea fishing fleet is moored.
While we were walking around the town Wendy noticed this van. A new occupation for me??
Shortly before we left California we saw this elk on the side of the road, our first of the trip.
Entering Oregon.
After another 50 miles we arrived at our destination, the Weasku Inn on the Rogue River a favourite haunt of the stars, including Clarke Gable, Carol Lombard, Bing Crosby and Walt Disney.
A four-thousand-five-hundred mile drive from Malibu in California to Anchorage, Alaska. The route goes via Vancouver Island, the Inside Passage, Juneau, Skagway, Fairbanks, Prudhoe Bay (Arctic Ocean), Denali National Park and finishes in Anchorage.
